The Islands Healthcare Complex – Macao Medical Center of Peking Union Medical College Hospital (hereinafter referred to as “Macao Union Medical Center”) has officially put to use Macao’s first Positron Emission Tomography-Magnetic Resonance (PET-MR) scanner and the imaging equipment combining Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography-Computed Tomography (SPECT-CT) scanner, demonstrating Macao’s new breakthrough in the development of nuclear medicine equipment. Such equipment, which significantly improves diagnostic ability and provides precision medical services, facilitates the high-quality development of Macao’s medical and healthcare sector.
At present, the Nuclear Medicine Department of the Macao Union Medical Center has established a suite of imaging equipment of nuclear medicine, including PET-CT, PET-MR and SPECT-CT scanners. In terms of SPECT-CT, 7 types of professional tests have been conducted, namely the whole-body bone scintigraphy, thyroid scintigraphy, parathyroid scintigraphy, lung perfusion scintigraphy, renal dynamic scintigraphy, myocardial perfusion scintigraphy and ectopic gastric mucosa scintigraphy. It will play an increasingly significant role in assessing bone metastases, evaluating myocardial ischemia in coronary heart disease and providing a precise assessment of split renal function. PET-MR provides precise diagnosis and assessment of complex diseases, further covering tumors, neurological and cardiovascular diseases, among others. It enables whole-body evaluation in a single examination, providing critical evidence for diagnosing and treating complex diseases.
Regarding drug supply and assurance, the Macao Union Medical Center has successfully completed the registration of key radiolabeled pharmaceuticals. It has established a comprehensive, mature and stable supply system for SPECT-CT, PET-MR and PET-CT diagnostic drugs, laying a solid foundation for the clinical application of new technologies and achieving the autonomy and the full scope of use for key technologies.
The integrated development of the Nuclear Medicine Department of the Macao Union Medical Center will help advance the early screening, diagnosis and treatment of diseases locally. Residents who previously had to travel abroad for examinations in nuclear medicine can now receive them right here in Macao. In the future, the Macao Union Medical Center will continue to optimize service processes. Leveraging the high-quality resources and technical support of the Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH), it will provide Macao residents with medical services that embody the “PUMCH quality” and strive to make positive contributions to Macao’s healthcare sector.
