Recently, Professor Zhang Shunhua, an ophthalmology cataract specialist at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, visited Macau for the third time. At the outlying island medical complex Peking Union Medical College Hospital Macau Medical Center (hereinafter referred to as "PUMME Macau Medical Center"), he successfully completed a series of 22 highly complex cataract surgeries, including 6 multifocal intraocular lens implantations, 15 single-focus intraocular lenses, and 1 single-focus astigmatism lens. This surgery was far more challenging than conventional cataract surgery and covered a variety of complex cataract types. These include hyper-high myopic hardcore cataracts, lens subluxation cataracts, ultra-hard cataracts after vitrectomy, pan-white hyperhard cataracts, and cataracts with severe astigmatism. The surgery went very smoothly. When the patient was checked and removed the gauze the day after surgery, he described his vision as "like new" and expressed great happiness and satisfaction with the surgical results.
This marks the third surgical collaboration between Peking Union Medical College Hospital and the Ophthalmology Department of Peking Union Medical College Macau Medical Center. Not only has it successfully solved a group of high-difficulty cataract eye problems, but it also, for the first time, performed multifocal intraocular lens refractive cataract surgery for three elderly patients with higher needs, providing one-stop correction of cataracts, myopia, presbyopia, and astigmatism.
For three patients with higher vision quality needs, Professor Zhang Shunhua performed the implantation of the most advanced multifocal intraocular lenses with astigmatism correction functions currently available in both eyes at the International Medical Center. For middle-aged and elderly patients with cataracts, myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia, and astigmatism, multifocal lenses can be corrected in a single surgery simultaneously. After surgery, patients achieve binocular distance vision of 1.0, and the multifocal lens allows patients to avoid frequently switching between multiple pairs of glasses, allowing them to carry out daily activities without relying on glasses. This marks a further expansion and maturity of the scope of ophthalmology services offered by our center, and in the future, we will offer more comprehensive and precise specialist ophthalmology services to more Macau residents.
