
The Information Session on the Selection of Specialties for Residency Training of the Macao Union Hospital was held on 6 March 2025 at the Press Room on the 3rd floor of the Administrative Building of Integrated Services of the Islands Healthcare Complex – Macao Medical Center of Peking Union Medical College Hospital (Macao Union Hospital). Co-organized by the Hospital Affairs Department and the Teaching and Research Office of the Medical Affairs Department of the Macao Union Hospital, the event was attended by 49 prospective resident physicians from Macao.
Deputy Directors of the Macao Union Hospital, Dr. Lei Wai Seng and Li Li, and all the members of the Teaching and Research Office of the Medical Affairs Department attended the session. Deputy Director Dr. Lei Wai Seng started the session by introducing the residency training of the Macao Union Hospital, including available specialties and quotas of admission, training program, remuneration and benefits. Coordinator of the Internal Medicine Department, Dai Yi, introduced the 11 specialties currently established in the Internal Medicine Department, including Cardiology, Pulmonology, Oncology and Neurology. He also vividly illustrated with a cartoon the scene of the medical grand round of the Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH), which vibrantly portrayed the PUMCHers’ rigorous pursuit of clinical excellence, free sharing of medical knowledge and patient-centered care. He emphasized that, in an era where medicine is constantly evolving, medical development should focus on deepening the knowledge of specialties, subspecialties and specific diseases, and the aim should be at training “scientist physicians”.
Coordinator of the Surgery Department, Song Kaicheng, gave an overview of the surgical development of the Macao Union Hospital and the PUMCH, including the platform of operating rooms, the volume of operations and the degree of surgical difficulty. Dr. Li Xiaoyan in Gynecology and Obstetrics outlined the work of the department. She mentioned that the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the PUMCH is divided into the General Gynecology Center, the Endocrinology and Reproductive Gynecology Center, the Gynecological Tumor Center and the Obstetrics Center. The PUMCH, she highlighted, plays an international leading role in the basic research of the pathogenesis of pelvic floor diseases and endometriosis, among others. She also noted that the Macao Union Hospital has sent technical and professional staff to the PUMCH for a three-month training. The Medical Technology Department presented the current state of the Imagiology Centre, the Clinical Laboratory, the Pathology Department, the Blood Transfusion Department and the Pharmacy Department of the Macao Union Hospital, and stated that the Macao Union Hospital would proactively develop the medical technology platform, pathology consultation, diagnostic and interventional therapeutics and the AI-assisted diagnostic imaging system in the future.
Later, prospective resident physicians asked questions about the training program, remuneration and benefits, and others, which were of concern to all of them. Deputy Director Lei Wai Seng answered them in detail. He encouraged young doctors with passion and aspirations to join the Macao Union Hospital, seize the opportunities and embrace the challenges.
After the Q&A session, the Medical Affairs Department and the Hospital Affairs Department organized a visit to the Medical Records Exhibition of the Peking Union Medical College Hospital, general wards, surgical operating rooms, the Imagiology Centre, the Clinical Laboratory and other departments at the Macao Union Hospital, allowing the prospective doctors to experience its new facilities, equipment and the high-standard healthcare operation mode.
